2023 World Intellectual Property Day | Unleashing She Power, Driving Chip Innovation

2023-04-26

On April 26, 2001, World Intellectual Property Day was initiated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), to foster the awareness of “respecting knowledge, advocating science, and protecting intellectual property” worldwide and to create a favorable legal environment for knowledge innovation and IP protection.

Committed to the mission to “Make Millimeter-Wave Serve Everyone”, IP and innovation have long been the lifeblood of Calterah. As of April 14, 2023, Calterah has filed over 500 IP applications, covering patents, trademarks, copyrights, integrated circuit layout designs, etc. In particular, patent applications worldwide have amounted to over 300, including 200 or so patents filed in China and more than 50 overseas patents filed in Europe, the U.S., Japan, South Korea, etc.

What is intellectual property?

Intellectual property (IP) rights refer to the exclusive rights that the owner is entitled to by law for the creation resulting from their intellectual labor and the marks and reputation in their business activities. Intellectual property includes patents, trademarks, copyright, service marks, trade names, the appellation of origin, plant variety rights, proprietary rights to integrated circuit layout designs, etc.

Women driving technological progress and innovation

In 1960, Xia Peisu developed China’s first electronic computer and wrote the country’s first textbook in computer theory. In 1972, Tu Youyou discovered Qinghaosu (aka artemisinin), which is viewed as an exceptional breakthrough in tropical medicine of the 20th century. Chien-Shiung Wu, a prominent physicist of her time, made significant contributions to the development of atomic bombs, and her work laid a solid foundation for the research of Nobel winners Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee.

From the late 20th century to the 21st century, women’s inventions and creations have boomed, with women accounting for a third of researchers globally in 2021. Women inventors across the world have been redefining the landscape of new technologies: Lynn Conway pioneered integrated circuit design; Mira Murati drove the creation of the hottest chatbot on the scene, ChatGPT; Fei-Fei Li from Stanford University spearheaded research in machine learning; Huang Qianqian developed the world’s first complementary tunneling device integration technology based on the 12-inch CMOS foundry, in collaboration with Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC).

IP empowering women’s equality and development

“Women bring new perspectives and talents to the table. But there is a problem! Too few women are participating in the intellectual property (IP) system. That means too few women are benefitting from IP. And when women lose out, we all lose out. So we need to encourage more women to use the IP system to protect and add value to their work. That way, we can: develop more and better technologies that work for everyone, establish more thriving woman-led businesses, support economic recovery and build back better.”

Women around the world have constantly helped shape the world through their imagination and talents. Statistics released by the WIPO show that as of 2021, the ratio of women inventors in international patent applications had increased to 16.5%. In China, the proportion of women researchers had hit 40%.

Pursuing science has become a choice for many women to realize self-worth. According to the “Intellectual Property Service Journey” of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), women comprised 53% of the workforce in the IP service industry, which means they have become an indispensable backbone in China’s IP field. The she power, a perfect integration of resilience and tenacity, has been perceived more broadly. Globally, women have made indelible achievements in advancing scientific breakthroughs, new trends in innovation, entrepreneurship, and other fields, and have changed our world. In Calterah, 20% of the authorized invention patents are attributed to female inventors, who have been making constant and remarkable efforts to the development of Calterah millimeter-wave technologies.

On the occasion of the 2023 World Intellectual Property Day, upholding the core values of continuous innovation and never-ending breakthroughs, Calterah leads all Calterah-ers to establish and improve a global IP protection system, help drive industry changes with innovative thinking, promote diversified development with technology, and accomplish every proud achievement with our strength. As the world evolves, we seek answers through actions.
