Breakthroughs in mmWave Radar Indoor Human Detection

2021-03-03

Breakthroughs Powered by AiP

In 2019 Calterah released an indoor human detection solution powered by 60-GHz/77-GHz mmWave radar chips for positioning and tracking personnel inside a room. Together with the vital signs detection solution, it enables us to know whether there are people inside a room and how their vital signs are.

On top of that, Calterah this time works out an AiP-based mmWave radar solution with new features like 3D object tracking and facility measurement, which offers a new direction and choices for markets of smart home, consumer electronics and senior care.

3D Object Tracking

With high range resolution of Calterah AiP mmWave radar sensor chips, both azimuth and elevation can be measured at the same time and therefore rich point cloud data of the measured object can be obtained. By processing such data, the distribution of the points in 3 dimensions (length, width and height) can be understood. Based on the relations among the distribution in 3 dimensions and changes in height in a time period, the posture (standing, sitting, lying and falling down) of the measured object can be determined, thus addressing the need to distinguish among adults, children and pets.

When combining the 3D object tracking and vital signs detection features, mmWave radar is expected to make our life smarter and safer. For example, by identifying the human posture and position, air conditioners will control the volume and direction of airflow in a smarter way. An alarm will be sounded out when a person is detected falling down or having an irregular heartbeat or respiration. Among many, one thing monitoring respiratory rate can achieve is to know whether a person is in sleep so that the lighting can be adjusted accordingly. Also, in the case of kids or pets being left alone in the car, warnings will be sent out to prevent tragedies. In addition, the way mmWave radar works frees people from privacy concerns, which makes it all the more ideal for use in private space such as homes and senior care facilities.

Facility Measurement

With high range resolution of Calterah AiP mmWave radar sensor chips, a practical and robust way can be developed to measure the area of a room employing methods of DoA estimation, CFAR and boundary searching.

Accurate measurement of the room size provides important basis for the optimum use of smart home appliances. For example, it helps air conditioners better control its cool airflow to achieve better operation efficiency. When combined with indoor human detection, it offers clues to televisions and speakers as to how to adjust the volumes accordingly.
