On June 21, Calterah exhibited its mmWave radar SoCs and indoor detection system solution in the Innovation Zone of TSMC 2023 China Technology Symposium held at the Shanghai International Convention Center.
The Innovation Zone has been hosted annually since 2021, where a group of emerging enterprises are invited by TSMC to present their cutting-edge products and innovative technologies. This time, focusing on the applications of mmWave radar technology for indoor human detection and tracking, Calterah exhibited the 60 GHz industrial-grade Rhine and Rhine-Mini SoCs and showcased, with a real-time interactive demo, the performances of a 60 GHz mmWave radar SoC with Antenna in Package (AiP) technology.
The mmWave radar sensors based on Calterah industrial-grade AiP SoCs, requiring no external antennas, feature a compact size of a fingernail and easy installation. Capable of sensing micro motions of objects, the mmWave radar sensor can achieve accurate vital sign detection and human tracking, while filtering out non-target objects. In addition, the sensors also boast contactless detection without privacy concerns associated with traditional monitoring methods like cameras, thus ensuring privacy protection.
Integrated Digital-Analog Circuitry Enabled by Advanced CMOS Process
As a global leader in designing and developing CMOS single-chip mmWave radar sensors, Calterah has developed highly-integrated mmWave digital-analog mixed-signal SoC chips based on TSMC’s CMOS technology. Moreover, through constant technological breakthroughs and innovations, Calterah has developed proprietary radar signal processing baseband and AiP SoC design, which have given its products significant advantages in both cost and power consumption.
Calterah’s mmWave radar SoC portfolios are built on two platforms, namely Alps and Andes, which are based on TSMC’s 40 nm process and 22 nm process, respectively. Calterah SoCs based on the Alps platform consist of the Alps, Rhine, Rhine-Mini, and Alps-Pro families, which mainly target the short- and medium-range radar applications, boasting high integration, low cost, and low power consumption, owing to the integration of digital and analog circuitry. Calterah’s next-gen mmWave radar SoC products, the Andes family, employing TSMC’s industry-leading technology of 22 nm process, achieves higher computing power per unit area and shows better RF performance than that of the 40 nm platform through innovative designs, thus capable of empowering 4D premium and imaging radar applications. The precise and comprehensive tools and models provided by TSMC on its process platforms surely play a role in achieving these results.
